Elle Fanning and Timothée Chalamet were spotted on the streets of New Jersey filming the upcoming Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown. Chalamet takes on the role of the legendary songwriter—with the permed curls to prove it—while Fanning portrays his ginger-haired early-’60s love interest, Sylvie Russo. Although the film’s release date is unspecified, fans are already catching glimpses of their hair transformations. Fanning’s, in particular, encapsulates one of the season’s most trending looks: red hair.
In the photos from the set, Fanning’s ginger hair is styled slightly off-center. In one photo, she wears her long hair down with tousled waves, and in other shots, she sports a half-up, half-down style.
Fanning’s new hair color falls between two popular shades: strawberry blonde and “cowboy copper,” both of which are trending right now. Strawberry blonde is described as a mixture of red and blonde tones, resulting in a dusty rose/orangey color, according to celebrity colorist Rita Hazan. Cowboy copper, on the other hand, “has a little brown hue to it, so it’s not as vibrant,” per the pro.
It’s uncertain whether Fanning’s new hair color is a wig, but it’s likely. After all, just days after the on-set photos were taken, the 26-year-old appeared at the 77th Tony Awards at Lincoln Center in New York, sporting her signature blonde hair. For the event, celebrity hairstylist Alisa Frum gave her a short bob styled with an off-center part and curled, flipping upward at the ends.
Adding to the likelihood that her red hair is temporary, Fanning is no stranger to wigs. She recently opened up about the process of transforming into an on-screen character in an interview with POPSUGAR. “[On-set makeup and costume] makes you feel unlike yourself, and that’s what you’re trying to do in films; you want to immerse yourself into the character,” she told the outlet. “One of the first [parts of the process] is about your clothes, your hair, and your makeup. All of that is on the surface, but it really helps embody the role.”
While her transformation for a Complete Unknown remains hush-hush for now, Fanning has spoken about the details behind her hair for her role of Michelle on Hulu’s The Girl From Plainville. “It was one of the first times that I played a real-life person who was in the news a lot, so people really knew what she looked like,” she told the outlet. “To have to emulate that was a really big transformation, and it was so interesting to work with the hair and makeup team on that. We even had a couple little prosthetics to make my forehead longer. The tiny little tweaks can make such a difference; it’s so fun.”
