While many go lighter with their hair color around the start of summer, Lena Dunham just did the exact opposite. The actress debuted jet black hair in an Instagram post shared yesterday.

“The youths say Wednesday, but I’m old enough to know Vampira did it first…” she wrote, in reference to the Addams Family’s Wednesday Addams and the host of The Vampira Show. “My beloved @16arlington for ghouls night out … fresh armor care of @infinitealterity.”

In the photo, Dunham is posing on a set of stairs, wearing a black coat, shoes, and bag to match her new hair color. Her newly darkened hair is parted in the center with a subtle wave.

Dunham’s followers have taken to the comments of the post to compliment her new hair color. “Ok wait the black hair slays,” singer Tinashe wrote. “oklkkkkk Hottie,” singer Lykke Li chimed in.

While Dunham has mainly stuck with brunette hair throughout the years, she previously went red for an equally dramatic hair transformation in 2017. At the time, she penned an essay for Vogue about her motivation behind the change, sharing that she was inspired by redhead icons throughout history as well as a need for respite in her life.

Beguiling. I could use a little of that these days, if only to reintroduce myself to my own allure after an exhausting year of health issues,” she wrote in the essay. “I was also wrapping up nearly seven years of work on my own television show, the kind of thing that defines your identity and occupies your days.”

It seems that Dunham once again felt like she was in need of a change. This time around, she channeled characters in the horror genre rather than opting for a copper shade à la Jessica Rabbit.
