DoTERRA, a popular Utah-based multilevel marketing company known for its essential oils, is undergoing a “restructuring,” as per numerous reports, which has resulted in laying off seven percent of its workforce, or approximately 300 employees. This news follows a series of other significant events in the beauty industry, such as the skin care brand Boscia’s closure and Beautycounter’s temporary hiatus.

Former doTERRA employees have turned to digital platforms such as LinkedIn to share news of the layoffs. According to these posts, affected positions include those of a former senior marketing manager, associate product manager, production manager, and customer insights specialist, among others. Notably, brand representatives, also known as “wellness advocates,” responsible for selling the brand’s products, were not impacted.

Employees received a mass email on Friday, May 10, informing them of the impending layoffs, according to screenshots circulating online. The email came from Chris Farnsworth, vice president of human resources, on behalf of doTERRA CEO Kirk Jowers, stating: “In about an hour, we will begin rightsizing our US workforce,” adding that impacted employees would be notified via email.

According to screenshots, those affected received the following message: “As discussed in our recent announcement, doTERRA is currently undergoing essential changes aimed at reducing costs and restructuring our organization. These adjustments are critical as we strive to ensure the continued health and stability of our company. Regrettably, this restructuring has resulted in the elimination of your role and thus, the end of your employment at doTERRA—effective today.”

“This restructuring includes global workforce reductions by approximately seven percent, a decision made after careful consideration of its profound impact on affected employees, who will receive comprehensive support packages, including severance benefits, outplacement services, and extended healthcare benefits,” said the brand in a statement to KSL NewsRadio.

“These difficult decisions are crucial for streamlining operations and continuing to deliver high-quality products to meet the needs of Wellness Advocates and customers around the world,” the company added. “DoTERRA remains dedicated to its mission of offering top-tier wellness products and making a positive impact on its global sourcing communities. ”

DoTERRA was founded in 2008. Its mission, according to the brand’s website, has been “to share the highest-quality essential oils with the world.” Its product range includes everything from essential oils and diffusers to essential oil-infused sun care and body care products.
