Kelly Clarkson revealed that she’s taking weight-loss medication, denying rumors that she’s using Ozempic—though she hasn’t specified which drug she’s taking.
The 42-year-old singer opened up about her weight loss on the Monday, May 14 episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, diving into the subject with her guest star, Whoopi Goldberg.
“Every time I run into you, you look younger!” she complimented her guest. “You’re like Benjamin Button. It’s, like, crazy every time you walk in!”
“First of all, it’s all the weight I’ve lost,” Goldberg replied. “I’ve lost almost two people.” (In March, the 68-year-old actor and comedian revealed to Oprah Winfrey that she’s taking the antidiabetic medication Mounjaro for weight loss.)
“I have lost a lot as well,” Clarkson added. Goldberg then shared that she’s “doing that wonderful shot that works for folks who need some help, and it’s been really good for me.”
“Mine is a different one than people assume,” Clarkson said, “but I ended up having to do that too because my bloodwork got so bad. My doctor chased me for, like, two years. I was like, ‘No, I’m afraid of it.’ I already have thyroid problems. I was afraid. Everybody thinks it’s Ozempic, but it’s not. It’s something else. But it’s something that aids in helping break down the sugar,” noting that her body “doesn’t do it right.”
Ozempic is a drug primarily used to manage Type II Diabetes. It contains the active ingredient semaglutide and mimics a hormone that regulates insulin levels and promotes weight loss. Currently, Ozempic is only FDA-approved for Type II Diabetes, but healthcare providers may still prescribe Ozempic off-label for weight loss.
Weight loss medications have become increasingly popular among celebrities, including Tori Spelling, Rebel Wilson, and Oprah Winfrey, who have publicly shared their experiences with these treatments.
Clarkson said that she weighed 203 pounds at her heaviest. “It’s funny though because people assumed, ‘Oh, she must have been miserable or depressed or whatever,’ and I was like, ‘No.’ I was not.”
In January, the American Idol winner shared on her show that she had been diagnosed with prediabetes, a revelation that motivated her to heed her doctor’s advice more closely. At that time, she didn’t mention taking any weight loss medication but discussed adopting healthier habits to lose weight.
Clarkson told People that she eats a “healthy mix” of foods. “And 90 percent of the time, I’m really good at it because a protein diet is good for me anyway. I’m a Texas girl, so I like meat — sorry, vegetarians in the world!”
In addition to her dietary changes, she also shared her favorite physical activities. “Walking in the city is quite the workout,” she mentioned. “And I’m really into infrared saunas right now. And I just got a cold plunge because everybody wore me down.”
