From being on the greens to setting sail and everything (quite literally) under the sun, these are the tried-and-true SPFs the in-sun crowd says they’re applying this summer.
Naturally Serious Mineral Sun Defense SPF
It doesn’t get more iconic than lounging poolside at the The Beverly Hills Hotel and, this summer, Naturally Serious is offering exclusive, hotel-only products at the storied spot. The UVA/UVB Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 40 Face + Body Sunscreen is available to all guests, while cabana guests will have their pick of two other specialty SPFs and a mist.
Bloomeffects Tulip Dew Sunscreen SPF 50 Serum
Hein van Haaster, husband of Bloomeffects Founder Kim and a fourth generation Dutch tulip farmer, was a big inspiration for the newly reformulated Tulip Dew Sunscreen. Having spent most of his time outside in the tulip fields in the Netherlands, Hein recognized the importance of protecting his skin from the sun at an early age, all-year round, and offered up some feedback on getting the silky-smooth serum formula “just right.”
Antedotum Essential Daily Sunscreen SPF 30
Influencer Alyssa François just started a hike club in New Jersey and word on the street (or, more accurately, trail…) is that she loves Antedotum Essential Daily Sunscreen SPF 30 so much that she is gifting minis of the SPF to the hiking group.
EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46
Pro golfer Yoonhee Kim is constantly in the sun and for her “fair, acne-prone skin,” UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 is perfect. “It’s oil-free, has zinc oxide and niacinamide. I can say with confidence that, even though I am out in the sun for six-plus hours, I don’t get sunburnt, and my skin feels great!”
MDSolarSciences Mineral Crème’ SPF 50
Charleen Senior, commodore at Palm Springs Yacht Club, calls MDSolarSciences the sunscreen brand you didn’t know you needed (pro surfer Paige Alms also considers herself a “huge fan”). “It is clean, reef-safe (thank you!), long-lasting and delivers excellent coverage,” Senior says. “I religiously wear the creme because it goes on so smooth, absorbs superfast, and protects me while I’m out playing in the Palm Springs sunshine.”
Oars + Alps Hydrating Antioxidant SPF 50 Spray
Oars + Alps has a whole section of their site dedicated to the volleyball players, divers and all-around adventurers and athletes who swear by the line. Olympian James Shaw calls out the spray as a favorite, while cyclist John Wessling also tags it as tops.
SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50
Pro beach volleyball player Traci Callahan has been seen “sporting” this derm-recommended, lightweight zinc formula that offers up a hint of tint.
Making the very multitasking “celebrity makeup artist who lives by the beach and paddleboards” list, Kindra Mann calls this new formula “unlike anything else” she’s tried “in that it acts as sunblock, a moisturizer and a perfect primer before makeup application or just as a last step in your skin-care routine, depending on the occasion. It feels like you’re not wearing any product at all and leaves you with a smooth complexion. It’s easily one of my new favorites.”
La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Ultra-Light Fluid Sunscreen
Olympian and long-distance runner Shalane Flanagan makes this matte-fluid, sweat-resistant SPF a standard skin-care step in her mornings: “I rinse my face with water and apply sunscreen. After dabbing your cheeks dry, use an oil-free, lightweight sunscreen in a sweat-resistant formula like La Roche-Posay 60 Ultra-Light Sunscreen Fluid.”
She may be the co-founder of the new sun-care brand, but Mei Kwok is also a surfer and the brains behind the bold and buzzy invisible gel, which just launched earlier this June.
It’s available in the mini bar at Standard Hotel Miami, Silverlake Hotel and Pool, Palihouse Santa Barbara, and Arrive Hotel in Palm Springs and was also involved in activations with Let’s Play Liveball (tennis) and Lady Dandelion Skate Clinic (skateboarding), so it’s safe to say this new-age classic is a popular pick for the outdoorsy crowd.
Soleil Toujours SPF 30 Antioxidant Sunscreen Spray
This luxe spray is sold in several beachy hotels and a couple of surf schools, including 1 Hotel South Beach, Beverly Hills Hotel, Four Seasons Maui and The Ritz-Carlton, Waikiki Beach, and that’s just to name a few.
Alba Botanica Day-to-Day Defense Primer Lotion
Pro surfer and brand ambassador Caroline Marks told us this sheer formula is her “go-to for applying under and over makeup” and says it’s a must-pack for when she’s traveling.
Alo Beauty Daily SPF Face Moisturizer
Tawny Janae, Alo Moves Instructor, says this brand-new SPF “absorbs really smoothly” to give a “light and easy” glow. “It has the perfect amount of hydration that doesn’t leave you feeling oily, and it sits really beautifully under makeup.”
Pursuit Beauty Double-Up SPF 50 Face Sunscreen Serum
The just-launched-this-week active-focused brand has the backing of co-founder and pro surfer Alana Blanchard, who considers this silky, lightweight sunscreen step-one to her SPF-driven skin-care routine.
COOLA Classic Face Organic Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50
Kate Bosworth may not be a surfer by trade, but she did a whole lot of surfing to train for her role in Blue Crush and this celeb-fave line says she’s a fan of the White Tea variety in particular.
Montauk’s The Surf Lodge has multiple skin-care products and SPF sold in their store via a curated Dermstore offering—think EltaMD, Colorescience, ILIA and more–through the end of September (free sunscreen is also available all-over the property, as well as gifted in-room), plus a Supergoop! partnership as well.
